THE NEW CONTENDERS
"Girls and women should-be allowed to participate in any sport they choose," declares the Women's Sports Foundation. But as recently as June 1977, the Pelham, New York police nearly arrested Cathy (Cat) Davis, professional boxer, for performing in an outdoor exhibition for teenagers. Cat Davis is a 24-year old and the national lightweight champion. She is one of 40 ranked women boxers competing in over 20 states. Although she's had 13 knockouts, Cat's toughest battle is her challenge of the New York State Athletic Commission's rule prohibiting women from boxing in New York.
Cat's story is now being documented on film. The New Contenders, a 16 mm, 26 minute color documentary scheduled for release late this fall, is produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Jane Warrenbrand. The New Contenders focuses on Cat's and other sportswomen's challenge of attitudes and laws which prevent them from participating in athletic competition on a professional level.
A Creative Artists Public Service Program (CAPS) Fellowship awarded to Warrenbrand initiated production of The New Contenders in April 1977. The film is intended to be the first in a series of films about five champions "with the strength, determination, and desire to win.'

Warrenbrand is seeking additional funding from individuals, foundations, and corporations to enable her and her crew to complete production. She plans a national distribution to a general audience of schools, libraries, sports and women's organizations, with cable and broadcast presentation and international showings.
